I'm trying to find out if the two major food service companies in my area hire right out of cdl school. I'm going in may to obtain my cdl and I should have it by mid july and I want to know if sysco or performance food group hire inexperienced drivers. I have commercial delivery experience with Fedex Ground and DHL driving a 24' box truck. I heard different things from thats all the experience I need to they want at least a year. Can anyone help me out? I'm in the Richmond, Via area. Also does anyone know the starting pay for these companies?

Don't know about those 2 examples , but I worked for GSF in Greesboro NC for over 30 years and they wanted at least 5 years I think....that may have changed , but for you to do the type of driving required for that niche of trucking you need plenty of backing experience , and a ton of tight-place/crowded parking lot experience. Call those folks like pattyj suggested...

I would think they want experience because many of their customers are very difficult for inexperienced drivers to get in and out of without damaging property. but more then that, these operations REQUIRE and DEMAND absolute dependability because they don't have an abundance of spare drivers to call in at 03:00 when a driver decides he's not going to work there anymore or can't wake his butt up at 02:00 every morning, 5 days a week like he thought he could. It's very demanding work and dependability and reliability can never become a concern for dispatch and frankly, most guys fresh out of CDL school have very little work history that could be judged upon for that type of work and scheduling.

Apply and see. I mean, the worst that can happen is that they say, "well, you'll have to come back when you have more experience".

My godson just got his cdl this month , and of course he was prehired by the mega carriers, but I was trying to explain to him being on the road ain't what's it's cracked up to be and starting out he will be making chump change, I told him to apply to some of the food service companies & don't you know he just got hired by Sysco ,starting at $18.hour !! So apply ,you got nothing to lose !

That's great, I suppose. If he has a good work ethic and strong desire/need to make it work ... it'll work out. I guess that's a decent starting wage for the job description. I hope they have some sort of OTJ training where the new guys run a few routes a few times with the old hands, first. Many companies in that segment simply don't have the time or resources to do this.

Sysco requires experienced. Not sure about performance food. As for pay, sysco is really good, drivers up here makes 70k+ they want the best of the best. Not "best drivers" but running hard to deliver food, physical work.

Let me explain he got hired for the warehouse , but he said one of the reasons he got hired because he had his cdl, now I know Sygma in Harrisburg Pa is advertising big-time for people. To train to get their cdl & are saying potential up to $72k a year

Where do you live? Sysco, mclane, mbm, us foods usually require a year. Dot foods takes rookies, I made over 70k with them last year but itll be a few years before you get a local gig with them
