I'm creating this thread to deal with a digression on my thread "Getting the CPAP Machine requirement removed from DOT Physicals".

On that thread, CrappieJunkie said that there is a national database of DOT Physicals. He says that all medical exams for DOT are entered into the database. He says that if a driver is getting a DOT Physical, the medical examiner has access to the driver's previous DOT Physicals. So if there is a national database of DOT Physicals, and if a driver is getting a DOT Physical at a doctor's office or with a new trucking company with a new medical examiner/doctor, the driver cannot get away with lying about his medical history if the driver told the truth about his medical history in a previous DOT Physical.

Lester does not think that there is a national database of DOT Physicals that medical examiners can use to access a driver's previous DOT Physicals because he thinks it would violate HIPAA rules.

This is a broad question with implications that go way beyond CPAP machines. It's worthy of its own thread.

Is there a national database of DOT Physicals available to doctors administering DOT Physicals?

I doubt the database is visible to general public, probably just medical people.

I am not arguing with you. I am just asking out of curiosity.

How do you know that there is such a national database?

There’s a national database where the examiner uploads details of your physical to the FMCSA…and that’s where it ends.

Another Dr cannot get access to your medical records without your written permission..period.

Can a Dr ask you for permission, sure. This is usually done if you put something down and they need clarification. They would ask for the records from your treating Dr, not from FMCSA.

I don't know if there is a national database or not. If there is one I'm sure only medical offices & regulators can view the info.

I don't believe that such a thing exists, even if only accesible to medical personnel.

Here's why...Back in March of 2022 I went to Concentra for a pre-employment physical for a job I had applied at and accepted. At Concentra they claimed I had all the earmarks of sleep apnea. Age, Male, weight and BMI. I told them I didn't have apnea, they said I hit too many checkmarks and needed a sleep study to get even a 1 year card.

I told the company that I wanted to get hired on with that I would provide my own physical from a medical examiner who was in the national registry and they said that fine.

Two days later I went to a chiropractor at a very large truckstop nearby and received a 2 year card, excellent health. Gave that to my company and they said welcome aboard.

Concentra "might" have their own internal inter-location registry.

So, I say prove me wrong that you can't DR. shop when it comes to sleep apnea probabilities requiring a sleep study.

Reporting Driver Exam Results on the National Registry – NAOHP

Dot physicals are HIPAA exempt - PERIOD!

If you want an explanation, then ask.
