I've been at ALTL for over two years now after working for a larger carrier (Millis Transfer) in the Midwest. ALTL is a smaller (100 trucks) family owned carrier that primarily runs east of the Mississippi but does run all 48. We have a mix of Freightliner, Kenworth, Volvo and International trucks all 2018-2022.

Home every weekend (yes, you can get over 3000 miles per week and still be home on the weekend), 70 mph trucks, very nice equipment with refrigerators, Apu's and inverters.

They don't micromanage or nitpick every little thing. The office staff is awesome and some of the driver perks are likely best in the industry. (Detention pay, Layover pay, equipment pay, multi stop pay, driver assist pay, vacation pay, holiday pay, birthday gift cards, holiday gifts etc.)

A typical week consists of leaving out of Hudsonville, MI and heading to the east coast- deliver and grab a backhaul coming straight back to West Michigan. Then grab a second load heading out and straight back. It's nice that you don't have to bounce around before making it back home.. 99% is out and back freight which is what allows me to get home on the weekends but still get good miles.

Outbound loads are non-forced dispatch so you have some flexibility in the areas you like to run. They also pay an additional $200 to cross the GWB in NYC which helps with the loss of time in traffic.

I've found my trucking family and figured I might share it with some of you as well.. we typically hire out of West Michigan but we do have drivers living in other states we frequent often.

Feel free to ask any questions about them here and I can try my best to answer them for you all. Drive safe everyone

We have a training program actually.. it's a 6 week program that includes local fleet training as well as our regional/otr fleet. We don't require experience for new drivers out of school, otherwise it would be 6 months for experienced drivers!

Great post, I was always kinda curious what is was like driving for altl since I see them all the time (I’m from Michigan). They’re a very clean outfit with nice equipment and I’m glad to hear that your happy with them. I actually considered driving for them when I got my cdl but the 6 weeks training was bit too much for me.

    Lonesome and navajo Thank this.

6 weeks of training should be the minimum requirement for all new drivers

We actually have some drivers that have been driving here for over 40 years.

The training program used to be only 3-4 weeks, but, after it was lengthened to 6 weeks (1 week local, 4 weeks OTR, 1 week final eval) it has shown that not only are the drivers much more prepared for the job, but incidents involving 6 months or newer drivers were cut in half.

I definitely understand why they would extend the training period to ensure that drivers road ready which makes sense of course. It’s kinda crazy that I run into drivers that still don’t know how to slide tandems somehow.
