Owner-operators, company drivers, and even some whole fleets took part in this year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy. Organizers set an ambitious goal of $550,000. They hit that goal and smashed the record with a whopping $600,000+.
Every year for the past 30 years, the local Make-A-Wish chapter for Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley has put on the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. It started back in 1990 when a young make-a-wish boy wanted to ride in a semi-truck and talk with his sister over the CB. Since then, it’s ballooned into a much large event.
The day starts with a carnival in the morning where families come out for games, music, food, and of course to see the hundreds of trucks and drivers who take part in the event. This year, when the 1:30pm convoy roll-out time came along, 545 trucks took part.
Truckers drive the 26-mile route from Lancaster to Ephrata and back. Some carry one of the hundred or so Make-A-Wish kids along with them, and all of them help raise money for the charity.
This year the event raised $600,542. According to Make-A-Wish, that’s $100,000 more than last year, and more than enough to break the previous record!
The event has gotten so big that it has out-grown its venue. Make-A-Wish says that they’re looking for a new venue for their 2020 Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.
“We need an area in Lancaster that can hold 450 – 600 tractor trailers, along with room for the carnival and day-of festivities. If you have a contact at a business that may be able to host the 2020 Convoy, please reach out to Cathy Haynes Schladitz at 717-283-4868 or email cschladitz@philadesv.wish.org”
