A trucker lost his life earlier this month at a truck stop in Ohio when he was hit by a Canadian driver while walking. Though authorities initially wrote the incident off as a tragic accident, investigators recently found reason to file criminal charges against the Canadian trucker.
Authorities were called to the Pilot Travel Center on Route 46 off of I-80 in Austintown, Ohio, at around 9 in the morning. They arrived to find that 29-year-old Arman Meco, a Michigan-based trucker, had been run over by another truck. The truck stop was busy, but no one had seen the incident.
Canadian truck driver Guillaume Pelletier, 24, told police that he didn’t know he had hit Meco until someone flagged him down in the lot and told him to stop. Police spoke with mechanics who were working nearby who heard Meco’s screams and ran out to find him trapped under the Pelletier’s truck.
Police found a phone and earphones near Meco’s body. Investigators initially surmised that he had stepped out from in between two trucks while listening to music, and neither he nor Pelletier noticed each other until too late.
There were no security cameras that captured the incident, but police were eventually able to get access to video taken by a camera on Pelletier’s truck. Its contents led police to charge Pelletier with Vehicular Homicide.
Captain Bryan Kloss of the Austintown Police Department told reporters that the videotape shows that Pelletier should have been able to see Meco for about 10 seconds before he accident. The Canadian driver drove a distance of 11 truck parking spaces between the time Meco is visible in the video and when the accident occurred.
Investigators still believe that Pelletier didn’t know he had hit Meco until the mechanics flagged him down. But according to WFMJ, the misdemeanor charge of Vehicular Homicide only requires a prosecutor to prove that it was his “negligent” behavior that caused Meco’s death.
“After reviewing the video there’s no doubt in my mind that [Pelletier] should have been able to stop,” Captain Bryan Kloss of the Austintown Police Department said.
It is not clear why Pelletier did not see Meco. A toxicology report came back clean, and investigators say Pelletier did not seem inebriated at the time of the accident. Investigators are still waiting on a phone record request to see if he may have been distracted at the time of the accident. Regardless of those findings however, authorities plan to continue with the same criminal charges.
“The Prosecutor’s Office is reaching out to that Attorney today to make arrangements to have the driver turn himself in,” said Captain Kloss.
If convicted, Pelletier faces up to six months in jail and a mandatory license suspension of between one and five years.

I’m not worried about 18 year olds as much as I’m worried about arrogant French Canuks running over red blooded Americans.
Oh grow up.
Wtf. Are u trying 2 make a joke. Young and dumb can get u killed but dead is 4ever. I’m sure some people are heart broke and miss. Oh wtf we gotta weed out the herd rght.
His name denotes that he may be Muslim, and being from Michigan makes my assumption very possibly factual.
You can blame Congress andFMCSA and their ignorance about these ELECTRONIC log books all they’ve done is turn truck stops into a raceway
Amen to that, brother!
Quit whining about the ELD. You either want to run illegal or aren’t smart enough to know how to use it
Yes, we want to run illegal, I grew up dreaming of the time I could run illegal, its everybody’s dream! PLEASE….There might be other reason to not like ELD’s or are YOU not smart enough to figure them out?
No I’m not stupid but have run paper logs for 42yrs and don’t want to fix what is not broken. I run 500 plus miles a day and have always passed a log inspection, maybe it’s the schoolboys out there that can’t figure out how to run legal on paper, and also have to have gps units because they can’t read maps either. So who’s the dumb one here.
500 miles a day……of course electronic logs work for you.
Jim, yo old school,,,
I’m loving the fact that I don’t have to read a paper map anymore, technology used properly makes our jobs easier and safer, although, I’ve found due to to so many road construction projects going on, you better have at least two GPS’s on most trips.
And I hated the thought of ELD until I learned how to use it. Now I know at a glance what i need to stay legal without connecting the dots.
Now if we can get the new guys with the restrictions of automatic transmission only to apply a little old school common curtesy in the truck stop parking lots, and doc areas, we’ll be golden..
Don’t worry about the Canadans. We better worry about R.E. Garrison from Alabama. One of his drivers ran into me walking in parking lot at loves in Texas . I hired lawyer but got nothing . R.E. Garrison repressive say it never happened.
I say you don’t see the way these kids are flying through truck stops, because they’re not smart enough to manage their time on ELDs..ppl stopping on shoulder of 75 mph speed zones taking 30 min breaks, coming back on the highway with no 4-ways or turn signal, just assuming ppl will move over,so many near miss accidents…no common sense out here or courtesy…
Mike, I think you’re missing the point on the speeding.
These new guys think it’s a cool way to prove their skills as a truck driver to drive fast and hard through the lots and dock areas
It’s not entirely their fault they drive like this, it’s how they were taught in driving school.
Two weeks and no practical experience for a truck driver is a dangerous combination.
Well said
That is correct this drivers that speed in truck stops are the same drivers that do 65 mph in the interstate inside lane and 20 mph in the tuck stopes. Thank you all and keep rolling.
Youre a fool who must work for a major carrier and has zero insight about the use of paperlogs…..
What goes around comes around. Remember that.
Hell yea!!!
NOT A FACT OF RUNNING ILLEGAL. YOU RUN,BUT WHEN YOU WANT A NAP,YOU TAKE A NAP. I DROVE FOR 42 YEARS,NOW I’M COMING BACK TO AMERICA AND GOING BACK TO WORK.
Lmao, wanting to blame anything, instead of accepting personal responsibility. The guy had 11 spaces, nearly a hundred feet, paying attention and at the right speed, plenty of time to stop. Then not hearing you hit someone and their screaming, totally inexcusable. Way too many drivers drive way too fast through truckstops. I pay close attention because you rookies don’t and I’ve been nearly hit a few times, myself. I’m watching drivers and making eye contact, pausing to see if they notice to give way or I’ll yield. When driving through I’m nearly idling watching for anyone from anywhere. I’d rather be overly cautious than kill someone. Them loads aren’t that important to race and take a life. If you’re willing to blame elds, please park, give up your keys and driving, you’ve no business operating a commercial vehicle.
The trucks are machines that we as drivers are to be in control of at all times.
Accidents do happen, to become distracted while rolling through a truck stop with other drivers on the ground walking.
To hit someone, and run over them and loose your life is careless driving.
This should have never happened.
Vigilant driving on the highway, brings vigilant moving of your truck looking out for pedestrian traffic.
So I guess pedestrians don’t have any responsibility for their own safety?
Amen!!
Amen seems this day and time it’s a race tracks in truck stop parking lots that’s the only time they the seat warmer’s can speed
Amen. Spot on.
Amen…
Yes so true!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Kelly!! You are absolutely right! I’ve had my CDL since 1990…before these darned ELD’s. Yes I ran two log books back then too…and was damn lucky I didn’t have any accidents. So, these ELD’s have the right idea, but they do cause me stress when I have less than 30 minutes to find somewhere to shut down…forget truck stops, ha! Truck stops are already filled up by 7pm. I still don’t ‘rush’ or be unsafe trying to find a place to shutdown; which is usually because I know ahead of time that I need to make plans to stop. That Canadian driver has no excuse for this. He should lose his CDL permanently, and maybe even any license. It’s clear he was not looking. Or, maybe he was???
Amen to you brother. Why is a load or time worth more than everything?
Amen I always slow down to bout idling speed and put 4 ways on every time I enter or exit a truck stop …shippers and receivers ….as well ….if I don’t take responsibility for my actions no one will…..
So the fine folks walking thru the parking lot don’t have any responsibility for their own safety? Stop staring at your phone and start watching where you’re going. It’s not rocket science.
You can be overly cautious and still kill or get killed. 34 years ago I became a trucker. It was totally different back then. Only 1 percent of trucks were blamed for accidents. We had no cell phones, ELD, FMCSA, ATA etc. The government got their hands in the cookie jar and everything went south. Trucking schools are going to pass students because they get paid for them. Ask any seasoned driver about ELDs. The “new breed” drivers believe all log books were used for cheating on hours…but accidents were scarce. Put the blame on the schools, the government and the drivers with attitudes on cell phones. I see it every day. Trucks are not little boy (girl) toys. It is heavy equipment that requires knowledge and years of experience, not just 6 weeks. Safe driving y’all.
That’s a load of crap. Has nothing to do with ELD’s and everything to do with New Mellinial CDL holders that think they are driving a car instead of up to 80,000 pounds of death racing through truckstop parking lot with a ” it’s all about me attitude”.
I’d take a millenial that is learning to drive anyday over a “super trucker” that has been doing it for 15 years that “can’t make mistakes” so they choose to do unsafe things because they have the “experience” to make it OK.
I agree FULLY!!!
You hit the nail right on the head driver.
No excuses for racing thru a truck stop…. what a idiotic statement blaming it in eld
That’s the STUPIDEST thing I have heard this year.
You must protect yourself at a truck stop. High visibility clothing, head on a swivel and keep your eyes and ears open.
I agree with L.A. Draper. People are never looking around them before they start walking. Every one should have their own responsibility for look over them before they start walking around and Stop listening music in their ears plug on.
With it being against the law for a driver to have earplugs in both ears I don’t understand why they put them in and all the years if they’re walking through the parking lot.
Once upon a time, their were better drivers, who used a gear shift to shift with and kept it in the same gear while moving through a truck stop.. They actually took pride in driving, parking and being a real truck driver. Today’s replacements for the most are a joke.
Amen to that, brother!!!
Not just todays!
Amen to that! I guess it’s not cool to be old school watching out for your fellow drivers by rolling slow through truckstops or facilities anymore.
Then call Me uncool, been truckin for 30+ years and was trained the old school way.Been safe all the way,and take pride in doing the job right.Right now I’m training new drivers, and teaching them the old school way.AND I DRIVE SAFELY FOR SWIFT!
Couldn’t agree with you more. Old school drivers are a dying breed.
Concur
That aint no lie!!!
You are 100% right
That’s not the case, the only difference in today’s drivers than yesterday is they didnt have cameras on the phone.yea to some extent drivers are different now,I only been driving for 10 yrs prefer the manual and I have alot of pride in backing.
So right my friend.
Pedestrians have the right of way…this ain’t Canada
Kinda surprised its taken this long for this terrible, terrible drivers to harm someone. Its really pathetic the quality of driver, car or truck. The “I dont give a **** attitude” has reached sickening levels.
West Pilot pigeon forge TN, I81, exit 4,… Caution on that parking lot also. There’s a huge dark spot, at night, in that parking lot.
I thought that was WHITE PINES, TN.
Drivers also need to slow down and not do mock 5 in Truck stops. No reason for it!!
I think you mean “mach” not mock, but either way, whatever happened to the rule-of-thumb that said don’t drive thru a parking lot faster than walking speed?
No reason to hit somebody on a truck stop.i see many truckers running like a crazy horse at parking lots.
Driving over 10 mph in any parking lot is criminally dangerous! Everyday I witness drivers, mostly young ones, speeding through truck stop parking lots. Another reason Im against 18 yr old drivers, lack of developmental common sense. The driver in this article is 24 yrs old. 11 spaces and still didnt see the victim? Head up as and speeding! Should be a felony charge with negligent behavior.
Only six months in jail????? Something seems wrong about that…..
6 months is nothing compared to the multiple millions the victims family will get from thd trucker, his company and insurance and the truck stop even if the charges are dropped.
Exactly. Seems punishment for taking a life should be more severe.
The Bottom Feeders have overtaken the industry! They don’t care about anyone else on the road or in a truck stop. Driving around with earbuds in both ears is not legal in Most states nor is it safe.
The guy walking had the earbuds in…. Not the driver. Not defending the driver just clarification for the comments. Driver should spend longer in prison if convicted.
And the sad thing is this driver will never go home again,as others only care about getting to the pumps. Then they take their half hour break right at the fuel island. And only a possible six mos. In jail? Despicable.
Wow,you said a mouthful about taking breaks at the pumps, hell,if you hit them at the right time,,,,shades pulled and all, taking up a fuel island for their 10hr break! I kinda see different patterns for different races, not racially profiling,,,just the facts for what me,myself see!No matter what the race,we all need to wake up and try to take care of each other out here!Government doesn’t care about nothing but holding their hand out for more money from the industry!People in cars don’t care about anything, but getting to their destination on time and do not care about how many accidents they may cause as long as they do not get hit and can keep going(lots could be avoided,if the same people/different day would leave a few minutes earlier to avoid driving like an a hole.)Sidetracked,,,point being,if we don’t start sticking together, its just gonna get worse!Over!
6 moths for criminal ?
Truck stops are flat out dangerous places. Like another commenter said, “Your head should be on a swivel”. Hell, the same could be said of shopping center parking lots!
Why does it always have to be the victim’s fault??? This guy drove ELEVEN SEMI SPACES!!! That’s 12 feet each, or for those who don’t want to do the math, 132 FEET!!! Truck stops may be dangerous, but they always have been. DRIVERS are what’s becoming MORE dangerous, not truck stops, and no one thinks it’s their responsibility, come on people, grow up!!!
I don’t believe anyone’s laying all the fault of the victim but I will say this when I’m in a truck parking lot my heads on a swivel.. because I have been at the scene of a man who was run over at the fuel island even makes me more intense about my own safety…
You’d have to work real hard to run over me that’s all I’m going to say…
Absolutely correct.
Social Darwinism….survival of the brightest and most cautious.
This is a tragedy all around… possibly a distracted or negligent driver with a distracted pedestrian.
AMEN, WELL SAID.
Same O story there’s no such thing is an Accident it is an act of stupidity on somebody’s part at 11 truck spaces they both should have seen each other both were stupid and not paying attention to what they were doing tragic thing to happen but it’s all too true and truck stops
People think that pedestrians have the right of way they do not only in cross walks in marked areas One driver has already paid with his lies the other driver must pay with time this is a sorry thing that happens but it’s all too true and truck stops
When I’m in my truck pedestrians always have the right of way, it’s called common courtesy. 40 years ago you did see drivers going like hell in a truck stop, plus they didn’t have to wear neon vests,
Because it just makes sense to be responsible for your own well being, but I do think the driver should have seen him
It’s a wonder this doesnt happen more. Look at how fast these drivers drive in parking some do it so they can here there loud Jake brake in a parking lot idiots. and other are just plain out idiots flying around. But us as professionals have allowed these kinda people become the norm
Seen a lot of bad drivers everywhere both commercial and public. Don’t know the details of what happened but I do know no matter what you are driving if your eyes are always looking forward you are wrong. You constantly need to check your surroundings so it is possible to miss something that’s in front of you especially if you are worried about hitting something with your trailer if you are pulling out of a parking spot, away from the fuel pumps or around a corner.
Or if distracted looking at the electric log.
We encounter the unexpected each day, and must anticipate it! Anyone who’s worked a collision knows/remembers. Since I was struck on a Harley by a stop-sign runner, my feet never go without a clear path. Negligent driving, complacency-kills.
I’m trying to figure out how it’s even possible to run over a full grown human and NOT notice until someone tells you….
Have you seen the youtube video of a trucker pushing a car down the highway…like hell he didn’t notice thar. Or one driving with a car pinned to his trailer with a driver in it screaming and waving arms. Ignorance is bliss?
It’s very possible with the pot holes and craters in parking lots. Noise from the engine and not feeling the impact if it were the trailer that hit.
This is a common issue at truck stops. Super truckers that drive around a parking lot going 30 mph with no regard for life. High vis PPE wouldn’t change a damn thing. I can’t tell you how many times these idiots come close to killing me and other people. I would say to put speed bumps through the lot, but these idiots go through potholes just as fast anyway. You really can’t do anything about it either. If you report them, they might get fired and get hired the next day anyway. It’s these drivers that make everyone else look bad. Only until people are killed do they get an actual slap on the wrist. They’re also still talking about bringing 18 year olds behind these vehicles? I need to get out of this business.
I would think both are at fault. On the ground walking you have to be aware of your surroundings. In the truck you have to stay off your phone and pay attention. Its sad a man lost his life this way. Money won’t replace his life.
Probably texting and didn’t look up for 11 spaces to see a pedestrian, other vehicle, or what-have-you. And the fact that his truck had a camera to capture the evidence means he should have been even more diligent knowing his equipment will tell on him.
How bout you charge the victim with negligent suicide…. earphones and all…
That s this new bread of truckers imagine how they drive at 65 or 70 miles per hour on our highways !!! Good luck everybody
Stop at any truck stop and watch how many drivers fly through ear phones on racing to park or fuel with no regard for others, mostly foreign drivers and young drivers surprised it hasn’t happened more often, bless the driver and his family.
The way some truckers are…. he was probably driving fast in that parking lot. Slow down when you are in a parking lot!!
He was pry messing with his ELD.
I about got taken out the other day at a loves down in indiana. Guy grabbed 4 gears coming out of a parking spot and was on his phone.
Some of these drivers fly thru truckstops like it is freakin Talladega. These people need to get off the phone, pay attention and Slow Down.
One died, 2nd one goes behind the bar, third one irrevallent but stayed blessed with $$$God, rests you all , fourth, fifth and sixth complete stranger like me throw lectures all day, point fingers, scream and hatch new rules, improvise the old ones, when get done with horse shits let me remind ya all when final day arrives to get picked you will be done from all duties, sufferings and ignorances by surprise. In our world human dies unnatural death 40% more than natural death and human kills other wild speces by (not raised animals) 50% beside natural death, ‘what a wonderful karmically balanced World’. Next time when you notice or hit a animal on the side of the road leave a prayers for it’s soul amen!
So true sweetie!
BS! I E mailed all the big boys about slowing these Automatic Flunkies Down! It’ll take the death of a whole family to accomplish THIS! It’s Pilot’s fault, No Speed Bumps. Sue the Fuck out of Them! Hold Foreign Drivers Passports! R We That Stupid
My heart goes out to both the victim and the driver. To know one killed someone while behind a wheel of a big truck is something very few ever come back from. Again sad day in the world of trucking.
Wasn’t the guy that killed 4 in Colorado coming down the hill 23 or 24 too? How Do you live the rest of your life knowing you took someones father mother sister or brother out of this world.
I’ve traveled with my husband and seen these guys drive way too fast in the parking lot and often distracted on top of that you have to watch out for them because they certainly don’t watch for you.
Race against the clock
Thanks elog
ELD’s have made truck stops in to Indianapolis 500’s. Untrained, uneducated, and everybody’s in a hurry! We don’t know exactly what happened yet, but we do know that someone lost their life. As for the whole crazy French kanuk thing, Americans need only to look at themselves, you’re no better then the crazy kanuk! I’m one of those crazy manuka, and I have witnessed a lot of supertruckers Drive like complete a-holes through truck stops. This is a Time to reflect on one’s own driving habits , instead of blaming everybody else
How can you NOT see around you when crawling thru a truck stop? Let alone run over a driver walking across the lot? I’m guessing he was on something. This clown is looking at mandatory jail time if he was stoned. Regardless, he still loses his CDL for five years, fines, probation, etc, etc. His driving days are over. That much is certain.
But hey….McDonalds is hiring!….lol
They said no drugs or alcohol involved. They might have been going the same direction and the pedestrian may have been hidden behind a mirror or the windshield post. We weren’t there.
His drug screen came back clean.
Its true that we shouldn’t be speeding anywhere especially in parking lots but i also think the fmsa bears alot of the burden with the pressure elogs put on drivers.
I bet he was playing with his phone. Speeding would have been noticed from the video.
I just don’t understand why anyone needs to gas on it in a truck stop parking lot. Only a moron would attempt it. Back in the day we were a proud bunch of drivers. We took our time in parking lots to show off our rigs and looked out for each other. How did we acquire so many idiots?
When I drive 75 through Wyoming,Nebraska and Utah I am doing more than 100 miles a day than you as you putt, putt at 65, while trying your hardest to earn that 250 dollar quarterly fuel mileage bonus…..BTW, I’m making at least 50 bucks a day more than you, 350 a week, 1400 a month.
Also, I’m not an aggressive nor distracted driver until a driver like you pulls out in front of me at 65 and makes a 5 mile attempt to pass JB Hunt truck who’s going 64
Should the driver have been paying better attention and stopped before hitting the pedestrian? Yes, but any time that I’m walking in a parking lot, I walk like all drivers are wearing sleeping masks. I never walk where someone can easily hit me, until we make eye contact and they slow down or stop.
Pedestrians are like motorcyclists, and just as hard or harder to see, especially when what you are expecting to move in front of you is 72 feet long and 13′ 6″ high.
It use to be pedestrians had the right of way..
Not anymore, while someone sits in there comfortable warm, cool, dry vehicle the pedestrian now needs to stand there in the cold, heat, wet with their arms full of groceries, etc, so as to not hold the motorist up.
I don’t trust anyone. Not just in truck stops but other places among 4 wheelers as well. Kind of sounds like he might of been distracted as well.
As far as driving like an idiot and using the electronic log books as an excuse to drive stupid. What are we children out here, no ones holding a gun to your head to drive that way. They probably wanted to drive that way in the first place and just needed an excuse for it. Same thing with speeding, just needed that excuse to do what they wanted to do anyway.
Just drive legal and the rules will sort themselves out when freight is held up. If you keep cheating it they’ll never see how bad the rules are, and go work for someone who pays decent to where you still make money running legal.
I’m with Mad Dog. Its a sad day and time to reflect on our own driving and behaviors. Accidents don’t happen for one or two reasons. It’s a compilation of events hours, days, weeks maybe even months that lead up to an accident. Just as it can lead up to avoidance. I’m surprised how many can point the finger without having witnessed it.
A distracted steering wheel holder ran over a distracted pedestrian. That’s what it comes down to. The nationality of the pretend truck driver is not necessary to be mentioned unless someone wants to incite dislike and conflict. These steering wheel holders are ever present on our highways, because there is a need to fill seats with cheap labour, and nowhere else is the saying “you get what you pay for it” more evident in terms of consequences than in our profession. Our profession stopped being attractive to our young people some time ago, and yet because of economical growth and expansion the need for drivers increased. You gotta fill those seats with something. At least until a full automation replaces this need ( and that’s still a couple of decades away ). We see the driving culture changing. There is more egoism, selfishness, me first attitude, disregard and disrespect of fellow humans and less and less pride and drive to be a true professional. For lot of these drivers truck driving is a stepping stone, a temporary thing. At least they think it is. So there is no care about adding goodness to the profession and bettering it and the perception of it. I could go on, but I’m tired.
That’s what I gathered Mack.
Both seemed to be distracted, however while driving, ultimately it’s a duty to pay attention and be watchful for hazards.
Being distracted…..It’s what the world has become these days. How many things can I do at once while going at a high rate of speed. Corieming out of control through life, and not enjoying it.
Sensory overload…..
Even walking around at truck stops, you should be alert to surroundings, ear phones in, not paying attention or hearing whats going on around him probably was as much to blame with meco’s death as the driver.
Don’t understand why so many are complaining about using the ELD. If they were using paper logs correctly, don’t you still have 24 hours in a day?! Hmmm
Truckers who insist on talking on their cellphone with an ear piece in their ears while walking across a parking lot really aren’t that intelligent.
It’s a bad deal the guy got run over. Apparently wearing ear plugs and radio not paying attention. We all know being intight quarters at a truck stop you better be looking around. The truck is bigger . It’s not a wonder we dont hear of more accidents happening at truck stops. Need to slow down!
A mans life is worth more than 6 months..Fn shame !!!
It is not eld’s. It is people in trucks that shouldn’t be in them. Drive like idiots in parking lots, thinking it is a race track. No courtesy, and they don’t care about anyone.
You have to be accountable for your actions.this new breed of drivers are dangerous. They speed in parking lots have no respect for others and have a real shitty outlook on us old seasoned drivers. I’m quitting soon before I lose it on one of these punks.
The one who has the best peripheral vision and uses it properly is the best truck driver out there…. Actually the best driver. including motorcycles cars SUVs motor boats helicopters planes and everything else
Yes E log’s have made things alot more of a pain. But it is what we have now if we try to change things we must stand as one voice.
Automatic tranny’s don’t help either. Just stomp on it and go. A good ole 13speed and you realize how fast you’re going. I love backing into a tight spot and somebody has too wait 5 seconds and acts you’re the anti-christ.
Your ,200 percent right
This could be Truck Rage! Done on purpose to let out some steam! I was at a Loves last year in Amarillo TX and walked out back to Truck at Pump. A Driver had Teuck in Gear let off brakes moved forward hitting me I pushed off the grill to side looking up and he ignored me as if I was not even there. Even after telling for him to stop! I know he did it on purpose! He never stopped! Trucker Rage my Friends. Don’t be fooled….
These companies hire people from around the world who don’t
Have any common sense to be driving a truck in the USA they have no respect for human life there I said it. And ain’t afraid to do so lets get real here you know am right
When I walk through a parking lot I bring my flashlight and aim it at the ground while I’m walking (think spotlight on stage). Always!! looking around. 18yo Drivers is a VERY bad idea as well.
WOW event at the high side of a reasonable lot speed of 15mph you can stop a 80k truck in 10 feet or so. This guy was obviously driving negligently. Even driving a car in a lot you have to be on your toes. Reminds me of all you idiots to lazy to properly park your truck by backing in.
Bad deal, but I was taught to look both ways same way I taught my kids and they taught theirs. I was home the other day and went to town with my granddaughter, when we got out of the pickup first thing out of her mouth was paw paw did you look both ways, how about behind you, make sure she said no one is coming from any direction before we move. She is only 3 years old and has it figured out.
Trucks in all truckstops are going thru parking lots way too fast..need to slow down for the very reason drivers are crossing at anytime..had this driver been going slower maybe things would have been different. I know we get in a hurry but incidents like this only causes a much longer delay and tragedy, were could seconds traveling slower would have helped both drivers .
pilot designed these stops. and there very out dated today . so let’s blame them, yeah pilot is at fault here.
I can’t stand even going in Truckstop’s anymore, I can’t stand looking at the new generation poorly trained by dispatch computers delivery boys anymore, with their short pants and T Shirts and backpacks 🎒 walking around like they’re on some college campus. In my day the GIRLS wore shorts.
The Canadian delivery boy didn’t feel like stopping, it probably was an attitude problem about revenge because American Driver’s are very RUDE to him. Not saying he intended to run over Meco , he thought Meco would stop or jump back out of his way.
The Ohio State Police 🚔 should have been called to handle this, not the Local Police, that Canadian Driver should be in jail facing a $100.000.00 Bond.
Oh one more thing, don’t ever try this in Canada 🇨🇦.
You won’t see the United States 🇺🇸 for a looonggg time.
I had 2 dodge a trk or 2 myself just walking normal AWARE . Be safe out there. It’s called BIG TRUCKS 4 a reason.
It all comes down to electronic devices.. eld’s smart phones bluetooth ear buds..no one pays attention to there surrounding. Everyone is to busy talkin or txting.. facevook etc…..
The new genaration of pepole are becoming acustum to self intrverted habits even without the electric devices atached to ones arm’s and ear’s . You can go to any major shoping mall and watch pepole walk into each other . So this is no surprise . IMO & SAD !
As long as he said “excuse me” before he hit him, Not guilty
Yeah that’s true everybody’s saying that this driver was speeding through the parking lot but do you have visual proof of it and ELDs are not the problem 11 hrs is 11 hrs 14 hrs is 14 hrs it could have happened to anybody time and unforeseen occurence nobody is exempt and as for doing 6 months in jail that’s the law becuz of the charges. It was not a murder it was a mistake
ELDs are not the problem. I run just as many miles on an ELD as I did running loose leaf logs (legally). Load planning and greed are the main reasons drivers drive like NASCAR drivers. Aggressive driving only gets you 5-10 extra minutes of drive time a day. Companies that plan loads matching the drivers hours with the load and paying a decent rate would help drivers not take so many chances.
Everyone complains about ELDs causing all the problems. It’s not the ELD device but the way it controls us. It’s supposed to be a recording and reporting device. Instead, it’s become a controlling device. Instead of simply reporting what we do it dictates what and how we do. Also there’s no ambiguity built into the thing. There should be allowances for certain situations and each situation should be addressed on it’s own merit. Oh, well… dream on, right?
By the way, there is AMBIGUITY, their way or hit the Bricks and keep stepping. LOL 😝
How does anyone expect ambiguity living in a homogenized and controlled and a conformist society?
It you want ambiguity, make yourself over a $MILLION a year and have politicians and high ranking 👮♀️ Police officers , Bankers and at least 3 good Attorneys for close friends.
LOL, then go live in Utah.
The whole trucking industry is the problem.
There’s just too many mouths to feed, Everyone else eats first and the Driver gets what’s leftover.
Sometimes you get a nice piece of cake with icing, sometimes you don’t.
Every load you haul; just think 🤔 about how many people are depending on you to pickup and deliver that load..That’s a lot of people.
You all talk about the camera. The camera may have been on windshield but driver was sitting back further. The ped could have been hidden behind his mirror. Everyone needs to keep moving head and body in truck to keep that blind spot away.plus complaining and quiting over 18 yr olds coming out, um, stay out here and respectfully teach them the right way!
Unfortunately today’s driver do drive 80000 pound car . Not sure the average but a lot of trucks today are automatic so there’s no shifter to leave in one gear going through parking lots that being said still doesn’t excuse what happened . I have seen and witnessed the Indy 500 parking lot driver , and all I could do is shake my head . When I started driving there was older driver who didn’t tolerate you being stupid , they would put you in your place and then explain to you what was right way . Instead of having issue with talking about it be proactive and participate let them know what they are doing and correct them . I know it a futile attempt sometimes but I am witness that it does work I’m still driving and love and hate it lol but end of the day don’t blame everyone or government do your part ok . Also I’m not excusing what happen it is very unfortunate that this driver died and the other driver did it . All I’m saying we need take care and look out for our fellow drivers . We also was young and dumb also .
I have been driving otr for 31yrs. Speeding is a big deal in the truck stops now. They need to put speed bumps in these truckstops every 2 feet so it can stop the speeding
I was at the Alamo in Sparks the other day and a JBHunt driver drove through the pumps in high range, day cab.
People need to stop crying about 18 year olds driving trucks, you ignorant morons have no problem sending them off to war to do what most of you will never do
The New Wave of drivers are a pathetic joke, nothing more than steering wheel holders…..little advice, New Wave, learn to become a truck driver instead of a steering wheel jockey
Never take things for granted, it could happen to anyone. No one is perfect from not making a slight mistake. We we had to do is pray it doesn’t happen to you.
I knew that it wouldn’t be long and I see or hear of something like this! I’ve been in truck stops and seen trucks come barreling through a way too fast, it even scared me for anyone afoot or another truck that could be pulling out or parking. Theirs no way they could have stopped in time. I thought that the truck stop was for fuel and a place for a little R&R to regain your composure for the road. You can stop quicker doing 5-10 mph than 30-35, you have tired drivers, drivers with families, drivers with pets and drivers that are trying to get their composure back from the encounter they just had out on the road because someone done a stupid move. Most of all, it’s just common courtesy and respect to not drive like ” A Bat out of Hell” in a place where you know there’s going to be people afoot. I’d hate to live with the thought of hurting someone just because I was going too fast in a parking lot.
20 years ago.. when i first started to drive.. i was so scare when backing up.. guest what.. driver round the the opene slot spot me. Some time 3,4 helper at a time.. 1 driver stand by my stepper guide me howto steer, 1 guy in front, 1 guy in back , 1 guy in front check surfound ij ng area.. i do the same, but now.. thanks to technology, elog .. people keep looking at the electronic screen rather the real scence.. look at gps for turn, look at google map for warehouse, look at phone when driving down tbe road.. and the worst look at elog to control the speed.. all my word us being safe out there.. one day it will be ur call..
I have been trucking off and on since 1990. I think the cops should have checked the speed of the truck which hit the driver that was walking. To see how fast that truck was going on impact when he hit the driver that was walking
I have seen many drivers drive in truckstop to fast. Because there are no markings for pedestrians in truckstop nor speed limits to keep walking truckers safe from driving truckers
