Cummins has announced that it is issuing a recall of historic proportions. Around 500,000 Cummins truck engines have been recalled, making it the largest voluntary truck emissions recall ever.
Earlier this week the California Air Resources Board (CARB) issued a report claiming that medium- and heavy-duty Cummins truck engines were producing higher-than-expected emissions levels. Cummins did their own testing and discovered that there is an issue with the engines’ selective catalytic reduction systems. Over time, these systems have been wearing down and becoming less effective. This increases the amount of chemicals like nitrogen oxide being released into the air.
The issue effects around 500,000 diesel engines produced between 2010 and 2015. The engines were installed in everything from large pickups to fire trucks to big rigs.
Cummins is issuing a voluntary recall which the EPA says is the largest ever of its kind. Current reports say that Cummins will not be subject to a fine.

I only have one 1 Question.
What’s the big deal behind truck polusion???
When we are Drinking, Eating, and Brething Radiation???
Just Japan alone?
Is dumping raw radiation into the Pacific Ocean at a rate of 1 million times greater than the human bean can absorb.
WHATS IT MATTER???????
Did you know they’re mixing asbestos with concrete to build the piers in the edges around their Island
The engines are junk. We have 2 one already rebuilt and still causing problems. Cummins only covered part of the bill. The second is in the shop now getting rebuilt. The bill is over 30k. Carbon packing is destroying the liners. This isn’t the fault of the driver. This is a rip off.
This recall is about DEF system. Which absolutely nothing to do with the engine. It is squirted into the exhaust.
really how many miles you got on yours I’ve got almost 400,000 and I haven’t had any problems at all
It is not a rip off, is a plan, they just want to make money, they know the engines are junk, they know that, but look how much money they are making, not only Cummins, same with Detroit, junky Volvo, they are all the same crap, the American engines are the best in the worl, what’s killing the engine is all the pollution garbage they are putting in it, that’s coming back to bite the dealers, they are part of the government scam, just don’t buy anymore of those engines like I’m doing, I put a old cummins N14 on my 2010, problem solved, I have not been to the shop in almost 4 years now and keep running strong, stay away don’t be part of the scam.
We’ve had our Cummins since 2005… no emission stuff… but 42000 hrs and 1.2 million km, blew up the day after it passed the sniffer test… best engine we’ve ever had
Is about time.cummins should be responsible 100 % for all the expenses that we have paid .because when you paid 1/4 million for a truck that give you all this headaches is not acceptable
The motors aren’t junk it’s the restrictive about devices. Remove the restrictions and let the motor exhale. Increases mileage and power. Less revenue to the state on had tax, see any correlation?
So what does the owner to do next, return to dealer?
I have 2011. INTL
2009 Cummings engine. And I have paid over 25.000 on repairs. 500,,000
Miles only.
“the new stuff is garbage” was never more true than it is today.
From pickup trucks to cars to heavy trucks.
It’s going to be tragic.
Hello,
What do you all think about the Paccar engines? My father is thinking of buying a 2015 KW with a Paccar engine, but he never had one before. Would you recommend a truck with a Paccar engine?
Thank you!!
I work at a kenworth dealership and work on paccar engines , it depends what he’s doing with it ,linehaul they seem ok ,they do have fuel system issues ,for vocational, heavy haul , mountainous terrain not so much .
They’re absolutely gutless. A 500 horse paccar has about as much power as a 10 horse Honda generator.
I’m also looking at a PACAR used truck and I was told to get a 2015 or newer and run an oil analysis and if it checked out Hammer down
No Paccar is basicly a cummjngs
Stay away from any of the new engines, they are all junk, if you want to go out of business go for it or if you are a proud lefty democrat who believe in global warming and you are willing to go broke in the name of the pollution scam, if not stay away, buy a glider truck with an older rebuild engine
I was with you till the name calling. Left Right who cares, we are Americans. Quit falling for that FOX NEWS CHANNEL and DJT divisiveness.
Dont buy paccar engine, pure boat anchor. No lie. I know of 2 2013 Petes with 125000 miles on paccar engine. Been in shop 75% of time. Multiple issues. Pure Boat Anchors
Dont we have a 2012 KW and the electrical system is junk. Boss is going to go back to Detroit 60 or a N14
Paccar is an ok engine when working right dont burn oil or water but has no balls because its a small liter engine and it stays in the shop with sensors trouble get a Dd13,14,15, (what ever it is)and stay away from cummins, paccar, and cats
Who hauls for the military families. I would do it, they make a great sacrifice for us. Can someone tell me who hails their belongings ???
Not people with Cummins engines. Kaboom!!!
The ISX has always been a piece of crap, they should have to recall the entire engine and install new updated ones !! Junk all old ISX everyone’s and replace with X15 !!
X15 is junk too, the problem here is not the engine itself, the problem is all the pollution crap they are putting in the engine, if they take all that crap away the ISX could easily be one of the best engines ever
They aren’t admitting to engine failures only that. The emissions system is not working 100%. Never mind the fuel pumps that if u don’t catch when they’re starting to fail will send metal into the engine
Cummins is a good engine I’m owe 3 Cummins and I’m happy remember no body is perfect
The engine is good to go….Regen really sucks. Cost me 3200.00 in regen repairs the first 10 days of ownership.
Paccar engine: Have deep deep pockets when it breaks. VERY expensive to repair
Thanks to the Government the Trucking Industry is Ruined…
If Caterpillar Engineer’s Said “It couldn’t be done” and this will affect the consumer… Nobody listened! Caterpillar pulled out of Truck Engine Manufacturing in America and it’s been Horrible ever since… The Shop costs for Cummins, Detroit, and I guess Paccar and Volvo have been horrible past 10 years for both companies and Poor Owner Operator!
I drive a Cat CT660 dump truck everyday. My company has 12 of these and boy are they some junk. They are constantly breaking down, mainly DPF system problems. Why Cat ever teamed up with International for their engine I will never know.
This recall is about the DEF system.
Which absolutely nothing to do with the engine. DEF is squirted into the exhaust.
OF COURSE IT DOES… it affects the WHOLE THING! Where have you been? You don’t know C***!!!
Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that the DEF exhaust treatment and Regen’s are the root of the engine failure and liner scoring problems. My Detroit cyl’s 4 and 5 liners went bad. Plus can’t find liners anywhere. Take a guess why. That sitting regen you need to do for that DEF pollution treatment will eventually run your engine too hot and the 2 cylinders that can’t dissipate the heat will fail. Every (Detroit) engine fail out there with a DEF system will see Cyl’s 4 and 5 are bad. I wouldn’t doubt the same problem for Cummins. A Detroit recall better be next!
ANY engine built in 2008 or after is PURE JUNK!! The DPF system packs carbon into the engine liners, heads & EGR causing excessive amount of wear, pitting & corrosion!! I’ve tried to tell people this for decade & NOBODY listens!! So your end result is HIGHER REPAIR BILLS & more/longer DOWNTIME!! So you go out there & spend approx.$140-$180K on NEW truck & go bankrupt trying to repair it!! Also, remember that the WARRANTY is LIMITED to what the engine manufacturer WANTS to cover!! BUY GLIDER KITS WITH PRE-2008 ENGINES!! At least you’ll have the opportunity to make some money moving freight instead of sitting in the shop for days possibly even weeks!! Oh yes, SCREW C.A.R.B. & their PHONY EMISSIONS DATA CRAP!!💯🇺🇸👍
ISX is a great motor if you don’t baby it and run it at 1200 RPM. If you drive it like that you better get ready for a rebuild at 200,000. Drive it like you stole it and you won’t have nearly the issues.
How big of a carbon footprint does a volcano leave emission engines get less fuel mileage and break twice as much good for the environment
Cummins like 1600 rpm 1700 uphill, 5 to 6 mpg, 13 speed. Def is amonia that is killing vegitation in ca, when it regens at 900 rpm it pours more emmisions in the air. Im a cat guy.
The company I work for has 2 axle day cabs that pull twin pneumatic tankers hauling all kinds of powdered products. All our trucks have big ISX 550’s and once they hit between 510,000 – 540,000 they encounter catastrophic failures. The last engine cost $48,000 to rebuild. The problem was the same on all 3, a part on the engine related with the fuel that’s made of ceramic breaks apart and causes this damage. Cummings doesn’t want to meet us halfway on the costs.
They have plenty of power accompanied by an 18 speed trani to pull 80,000 up hills but a shame they only last 550,000 miles or so.
Replace the ceramic plungers with the newer steel ones and that problem is non-existent, but it has to be done before the fuel pump grenades. From what I understand, these ceramic plungers were only used in 2011-12 model CM 2250 ISX, newer ones cane from the factory without the ceramic plungers I believe.
And why spend $48k on a rebuild when a new motor can be had for considerably less?
The Cummins XPI High Pressure Fuel Pump had ceramic plungers until mid-2015. The plungers were re-designed with steel allow w/diamond dust coating. Fuel pump and related oil bypass failures, among other common engine platform failures cost Cummins $1M per month in 2015. Thats a few engines and, of course, the tractor owners paid large portions of these repairs.
Fast forward to the 500k engine recall…. SCR aftertreatment is junk. It could have been tested in real world conditions on a few thousand tractors getting 250-to 400k miles each. Then, maybe the thousands of “desk drivers” who design this crap would have had an idea how to make improvements and make the aftertreatment more reliable.
The owner operators and small fleets did the Research & Development for all the brand tractors out of their wallets.
How about a Class Action lawsuit against the EPA and the tractor OEM’s for the fraud they have orchestrated??? Maybe RICO statutes apply….
This is just beginning….
The same thing happened to me as well. My DEF was was sending to much fuel through the system. Cost me $4500. Two years later from date. I now hav a hole in my DEF from to much fuel being sent through the system. Which they only warranty for 1 years. This was a internal problem with no check engine until their was a hole. Now I had a bill for $8500, because of to much fuel being sent through the system and made problems worse.
It’s about time! But is it going to cover the EGR problems also? Ours has 125,000 miles and we just had to replace a 600 air bypass valve because it was plugged with soot!!!! It’s bullshit for the amount of money they cost!!! Our DEF system has caused us a ton of issues also
You can rebuild an older exempt and emission free truck much much cheaper than to purchase a new truck. Lil elbow grease and determination will save you a ton $$$$
At least they did a recall. Unlike Volvo d13’s with a known injector cup issue and they still pretend there’s no issue. But they will happily sell a replacement kit!! With labor in Vegas is 8400.00. But I would still prefer d13’s over a Cummins that only get 400-600k before a rebuild. My d13 is at 900k with no issues so far. Thank god.
We have 5 heavy haulers with modern ISX engines, they seem to be fine, the oldest has 600k on it. Just clean the DEF tank vent once in a while, change the fluid filter every 200k and have them bake the DPF every 400k.
Cummins IXS engines are no good I have one at 545,000 needs a rebuilt. If it was a Detroit I would have over 1,500,000 or more before a rebuilt. Costly experiment for the customer thanks again Cummins
Barney Big Rig You are right on it. They are pure junk
People wake up its the DEF system thats causing the issues….
Somehow you think its a cummins only issue? Foolish people ?
Its a new truck EPA issue…. The engines run good just remove the after treatment. You will get more power and less issues, beware of the EPA fines…
It all goes back to the EPA emissions requirements. None of the manufacturers wanted to put the DEF/SCR hardware on the engine or truck. Remove that stuff and all of the engines will last longer. This is the EPA driving this, not the manufacturers.
Delete your truck and don’t go to Cali. They don’t deserve our service!
