Scattered across the country, there are towns and small cities who have tried to institute truck bans either to eliminate truck parking or truck traffic in general. Now one town in New York has taken it a step further; a truck stop is being built which doesn’t allow trucks.
A Welcome Center rest stop which is planned for the Long Island Expressway will ban large trucks and buses from using their facilities after the town threatened to sue them if trucks were allowed.
Citizens of Dix Hills, NY on Long Island are pleased that their new state-of-the-art rest stop with video monitoring, on-site law enforcement, food, 24-hour restrooms, and lighted parking will be off-limits for truckers.
“The residents that I have spoken to that are most directly impacted are happy with the fact the trucks are being moved out of their backyards,” said local assemblyman Andrew Raia.
It’s not only the rest stop itself that will have a ban on truck parking, but also the roads that lead to it. In fact, the previous rest area (which did allow truck parking) will be closed and all trucks will need to park at a DOT maintenance facility which has room for only 27 trucks.
But for some residents of Dix Hills, even this isn’t good enough. Sheila Saks, a former president of the House Beautiful Civic Association in Dix Hills is worried that federal regulations would be able to require that trucks be allowed to park at the new rest stop. In demanding the rest stop not allow trucks, the town had to agree to give up the right to sue the rest stop for tearing down trees and building so close to residential areas.
“Are we then not allowed to litigate? To me there are still too many unknowns that have not been detailed and specified to us about the plan,” Said Saks according to Newsday.
“This by far is a much better situation for the residents with the trucks gone,” said a town supervisor. “It’s also an improvement to the quality of life and air quality.”

At the very least the entitled ones in dick hills believe they are better than anybody else well you don’t want trucks in your backyard what if we just don’t delivered anything there or put a nice juicy surcharge on your goods how does it goes an eye for eye…
Great. Unless you get to a truck stop before noon, in many big cities, you will find no parking. No parking on ramps. No parking within city limits. No parking on industrial streets. AND NOW, no parking at a rest stop. To all the city councils and city managers all across America…Go ph_uck yourselves!
I agree
BOYCOTT ..DO NOT DELIVER TO THE TOWN.. LET THEM DRIVE 25 MILES TO BUY ANYTHING.
My thoughts exactly. Let them go out of their way in traffic jams to get what they need.
Great idea. It would be great if the trucking industry boycotted all communities that ban or attempt to ban trucks. It would definitely have an economic impact on the community because so many businesses would struggle since they can’t get inventory. Another great benefit of such an action would be the necessity for the residents to travel to neighboring communities to buy their goods. That would be so awesome because all they would say is, “I can’t understand why we have to travel to get things and why are so many businesses leaving the area.” Oh well, wishful thinking at least.
In many states truckers cannot use certain rest areas. There are weigh stations that have been closed down, truckers could park there but they will not allow parking. We are not allowed to park on ramps and they are not enough truck stops. What are we to do? They want the products that we carry but not our trucks. Just trying to do my job but I feel like a second class citizen.
EXACTLY… Let’s see when shelves aren’t stocked, who will be complaining then…
I’ll second that! People need to take their head out of their collective asses and remember that without truckers this country would grind to a complete stop. A lot of good those fancy houses in Dix Hills will do their owners when they can’t furnish them, or put food in them!
I say fine, let them get their own products, that they so conveniently need! That includes gas, for their cars, etc…..We Drivers are treated bad by our companies, the community and even Law Enforcement!!! Time to move over and get out of trucking all together! Peace Out!!!
And yet they would be want to sue the heavens and beyond if a truck didn’t deliver food to their local supermarket or fuel to the gas stations. Wonder if they like having their local 7-11 or whatever they have in the nose up in the air town stocked? This the typical “we want trucks but don’t want to see them”
maybe you drivers that go to the Island should drop your freight and reafer loads within 50 miles of the city and let another company deliver them.I know its not up to the driver but the companies should start thinking about this. I have done this pick up a load in N.C. take it to cunts point, but the load goes to elizebeth to be transfered to another companies trailer and I be on my way to get another load after my 10 hour break. The company I was hauling for didn’t want us at the point ,I really didn’t want to go there , so everything worked out fine.
I take it this town doesn’t want supplies brought to it. So be it! Have fun running to your nearest grocery store!
Amen
Dix Hills is a tiny bedroom community who’s largest buisness might be a nail salon.
What we need is someone with some intestinal fortitude in Albany to tell them to pound sand as they have no say over the interstate.
It’s the same logic that leads to the weigh station/parking area in NJ on 78 that closes at 5pm or the “noise zone” near the tollbooths on 80 in Indiana.
Yet another example of how truckers have been kicked out of the human race.
Too many piss bottles and trash bags thrown on the side of the highway. And drivers still question why people hate trucks/truckers??
Plenty of free labor in prison
Last time I checked
Wouldn’t need that free labor if drivers quit throwing their trash out on the ground. It’s a nasty deplorable unnecessary behavior that needs to stop yesterday or the the day before. When I was in the Army, every soldier complained about having to conduct “police call” on an area. The ones that moaned the loudest where usually the ones you’d see throwing trash on the ground. They never got the point that police call wouldn’t be necessary if there was no trash there to pick up.
Funny, I was just at a rest area in CT this morning. All the trash, cigarette butts and (piss?) bottles were in the 4 wheeler lot.
But then all accidents are caused by trucks too, right?
Absolutely right..quite be unprofessional and trashing America and maybe the people would start Respecting Us all. Some if us are Professional and we put our trash in the proper place.
My thoughts exactly
My advice to the truckers. “Refuse to deliver to this city regardless of the circumstances.” They want to band trucks, then the truckers should band them from receiving their building supplies, medical supplies, home supplies and even their electronics’ and clothing. When the shelves at the super market start going bare and the doctors have no supplies, then they will realize the stupidity of their decision.
I think this is a great idea, but not all drivers can pick their freight or destination.
You mean “ban” not “band”. They aren’t trying to play musical instruments.
I (we) as an industry knew (understood) what the author of the comment intended.
Your note of a grammatical error was rude.
And you…as an individual, may not care what someone else thinks…and in that same line of thought, I (we) as an industry, don’t care what you think either.
Well said Dave. It’s unfortunate that some people think they make themselves look intelligent by making others look (and feel) stupid. Maybe they should look back at their own mistakes.
You should always care about your grammar and spelling. Would you want to be accused of failing to pay attention to details.
It is a sign of your intelligence.
I grew up with a spelling problem and now I prefer to check my grammar and spelling.
Charles is your typical dip sh%t driver who only chimes in with his 1.3 cents when he can point out another person’s mistake. Makes old Charlie feel important
That unfortunately won’t work. It’s Long Island NY, so they’ll just go to the next town.
We all need to do this and not just there!!!!!!!
I hear that over and over but don’t see it ever happening! And yes, it would get the message across.
It would work, when their property values plummet to nothing because you can’t buy anything within miles of their town…
I agree with what you are saying but if you don’t want to go to the city then why take the load to begin with. I realize that O/O can refuse a load but its hard for a company driver to do so. In this case the company has to make arrangements for the load to be delivered or refuse the load.
This is why I dont go to NY. I banned my truck from going any where in the NYC and islands. They could do without for all I care. PA is as far NE i go……
You don’t want trucks on long island if we can’t find a place to park. Avg 3 hours to get from GW to Central Island make a delivery and hope to get out. When others take a lead from me you all will be driving to NJ yourself to get your goods and go back home. I don’t go back there any more it does not pay unless your local union @ $25 plus per hour no matter how long. Good luck LIS
Just stop all deliveries to that town. When it dries up they’ll scream for trucks. Then charge triple the rates. Teach them a lesson and warn other communities that trucks are needed!
Town has no businesses. It’s all housing (Google it)
But the fact that the same DOT that beats us up for HOS & fatigue won’t go to bat for us for appropriate rest areas is infuriating.
Do you really think that the comments you post are even seen by the ppl of this community and if they were they wouldn’t care anyway. I have a solution for those smuckes in New York. Buy all your stuff off the internet and have it delivered by drone.
That’s fine. New England is FAMOUS for being trucker “unfriendly”. When I drove I got a premium for going into that cesspool. The harder they make it, the higher the premium should go, likewise the higher their prices. Cities or towns that ban trucks should have to send vans to a central location in their state to pick up the STUFF they buy. Truckers can offload there, and those cities and towns can pay a handsome premium for ALL their goods.
As a trucker, I would have LOVED a New England “Drop and Hook” terminal, where I could have gotten into New England and gotten OUT of New England A.S.A.P.
I sure didn’t care for New England MUCH MORE than they didn’t want me there.
N.Y. is not part of New England but I see your point. There are drop yards all over New England. Your company or the broker or yourself just have to make arrangements with a company and they will tell you where to go……drop your trailers.
It’s not just the town that should be punished it’s the whole island. State and local law makers allowed this to happen.
There is no solidarity with truckers. Someone will always agree to deliver to chitty places. I agree with the raising of premiums to drive there though..and consequently raising the prices of delivering to the customers there. It won’t happen though. People bitch about articles like this..and then nothing. Been that way for the past 15 years I have driven. I don’t see it changing. Good luck. I quit.
This time US Truckers should stand together and completely ban this whole area….snooty azz people……. But….if we continue to make deliveries there ,then we may as well shut up……
That would be a great idea. Truck drivers standing together.
The problem is…there is a 100% driver turnover ratio in the industry. (Source: thetruckersreport.com / OOIDA)
Basically all new driver hired leave the industry before 90 days.
Thus…NO UNITY.
I’ve personally complained about that craphole (N.E.) for years. And with little results.
If you’re a company driver…just know that the “company” is getting paid to be there…they’re just not passing it on the driver.
FEW…if any companies are forced dispatch (if your company is, I ask that you post it here so that others will know.)
So…just Dont take that load.
Yeah yeah…I know they’ll hold loads back and you’ll lose some money. Yet have you stopped to figure what you’re making at zero to 5 mph while stuck in that craphole?
You make the call…just stay save in all you do out here.
Too bad the trucking companies answer drivers can’t get organized enough to ban together and just refuse to deliver goods to theses cities and states.
I have already refused loads into these areas. Won’t do it.
As a retired trucker I must say, don’t place all the blame on those town folks. We are our own worst enemy. With piss bottles thrown everywhere and attraction of lot lizards, we have lost a lot of respect.
Agreed. A few bad apples have spoiled it for the rest of us out here, unfortunately.
I can agree with the own worse enemy part…but it didn’t use to be that way. (Back when “lot lizards” did exist. They don’t now and haven’t been an issue since the “online” era arrived.)
But you at right on with the disrespect shown by what they put behind the wheels of there trucks. They’re punks and thugs. (Actually a punk and a thug are the samething. And you know who you are…)
It doesn’t matter to those sub humans…it doesn’t effect them. They won’t stay in the industry long enough to see their damage.
But…even prior to the HUGE influx of punks into the industry, the N.E. was NOT truck friendly.
That is mostly due to the population of more people than there is room for.
It TOO crowded…
this is so true. Nothing more discusting then to see a piss bottle or a baggy on the ground. If you have to go that bad check do an in trip check of your truck and have a leak at the same time ,no one will know the difference. If you have to take a dump , well watch out for poison ivy.During the day, when you first drag your butt out of the sack, you should do several things. First use the rest room, then get a coffee then maybe some eats. When you are done for the day you do the same thing.I never had a problem doing this in over 45 years of driving all across this beautiful country of ours.
I agree.
Sometimes we bring the problem to ourselves
Truckers can shut down the industry for a week or two if they want to, but the don’t have to…They can simply target a state, and refuse to anything in that state…Fuel, food, etc… They can even go so far as to not pick up or deliver to that state…They were successful at this in the 1970’s when they exercised a boycott against the state of Indiana…Businesses put the pressure on the politicians, and ordered law enforcement to back off…You states that are doing this to truckers…You’re rolling the dice, because they will at some point pick a state to boycott, and set an example to the rest of you.
In the 70’s we had ‘hands’ out here. NOT ‘drivers’ as they call themselves.
And you’ll NEVER find enough people to stick together to boycott ANYthing.
Read my prior comment.
There is a 100% turnover ratio in the industry…
The ‘hands’ with enough money in retirement, started leaving the road when they changed the HOS back in 02 and I think finalized it in 03. They knew the new HOS with its 11/14 would choke off their ability to run freight…and it did.
I just wasn’t able to quit…but I still miss the old HOS.
We were delivering freight a long LONG time before cell phones and QualComms GPS were EVER thought of…and at a LOT better rate than today…
I agree with you . My dispatcher asked me the other day if I had a gps and I told him no. the one my sister had given me didn’t give me directions right so why should I trust another one. Get a map and learn how to read it.Simple as that.
Truck GPS systems do work. I’ve been using one on my phone for a couple years. You can’t, or shouldn’t use any system designed for cars that you can’t program for trucks. For sure you’ll get in trouble. Just keep in mind you still have to use common sense. Don’t go over a bridge just because your GPS says to.
Exactly. .Take England trucking for example.. They put 3 drivers in one truck. They would love for drivers to Boycott. They would pretend to be above the rest and take advantage of the situation. With 3 people in a truck you never run out of hours or a place to sleep..
c r England isn’t the only company to assign 3 drivers per truck, crst does 3 driver rotations, hmm, that means that truck never gets serviced…..
I don’t think the mega trucking companies would allow their drivers to participate in such an event. Jobs would be on the line, and making deliveries ANYWHERE is more important to them. They would expect their drivers to deal with the situation. However, any safety related issues (with no place to park) that may arise from HOS (since most of them now run elogs) would definitely be a major concern. That would affect their safety rating in the industry. Which causes problems in other areas, like random inspections and Insurance premiums. (unless they’re self insured). Only then would they feel a need to do something about it. I’m not sure what that might be.
Ok that’s fine! Stop delivering the crap they want to buy and see how much they hate trucks!!
If this is using government funds to be built how can they not allow all Public to use it. Aren’t we granted equal protection under the Constitution of the US.
We are third class citizens, John. We have NO protection from stupid people.
That’s fine, let them pay truckers a 30% fee for all products hauled in to them.
Big whoop. I didn’t want to stop in their cr@ppy crime riddled town anyway.
No deliveries to the area, no buying supplies there and dont even go near there . give them there wish.
No more food for Dix Hills…
Nothing new really, I pass rest areas lots of times with “no trucks allowed” plastered on the sign. On a side note I’ve seen many “truck only” rest areas as well. I enjoy my drive and like the views you can sometimes get from the road so it’s no wonder most of the “car only” rest areas I see are over-looks with nice views.
The basic problem is selfishness in a whole society. People putting their own feel good ideas of perfect surroundings for themselves above the needs of those who deliver their life support products. The truckers who drive for a living need parking and rest far worse than the commuters and travelers need a rest stop. (I’ve been both, it’s easy for a smaller vehicle to find a place to stop awhile, not so easy for a big truck that may be 70-80 ft long and take space to maneuver) Selfishness has their priorities backwards, they end up like unreasoning animals who bite the hand that feeds them. If ignoring the needs of the support systems go too far there will be repercussions. The support systems of society will break down. It may go on a long time and put up with much abuse. But when breakdown happens it’s likely to be big, and it will be caused by something other than truckers striking, too many truck drivers depend on daily wages now and cannot financially survive a strike. The ratio of income to expense in trucking has gotten much tighter than it once was. Even the owner operators have to keep moving or they fall behind financially. We’re there right now with a large truck repair bill that set us back, fortunately we have some good drivers and they are moving efficiently and catching up. Suddenly no fuel, no food. It all gets hauled in on trucks daily with very little reserve. I’ve heard there’s generally around 3 days supply in reserve if the trucks quit moving. Their first priority needs to be a truck parking area if their priorities where strait.
I don’the take loads going into New York as it is. Far as I’m concerned they can starve.
If this rest area is built using Federal money I don’t se how they can deny trucks and buses from using it. Is this not a Interstate highway?
The solution is easy.. DONT DELIVER ONE ONCE OF FREIGHT OF ANY KIND IN THESE TOWNS, CITIES, COUNTIES.. NOTHING.. NOT FOOD.. FURNITURE.. BUILDING SUPPLYS.. NOTHING.. And when the city lets trucks in.. A very public applogy from those in charge.. TV.. the media etc.. Make them eat a little crow.. And if they make it difficult for any trucking company.. CUT THEM OFF AGAIN.. they keep it up.. The citizens will come close to rioting..
To all those who are banning trucks from your town or roadways: Don’t talk with your mouth full!
what a hateful little town.
Well I think it’s time we stop driving our trucks into long island. When there stores and medical facilities have no supplies, you can bet trucks will be welcomed with open arms. It’s just another way to discriminate against trucks. NJ has two parts of the turn pyke. One for only cars, and one for both cars and trucks, so they can cater to cars. Theses idiots need to remember were there essential needs come from. Here’s an idea, lets only go as far as the clearview and 495 ramp, and if theses people want there food, clothes, medical supplies and anything else let them come to us to get it. When the rich retards learn they can’t just go to the store of the hospital they will change. Also what about garbage trucks and snow plows, they are trucks? Also if trucks can’t go into this new rest area, how are they going to get there supplies?
They had me at “Dix Hills”. ?
As a ride-along-truck driver’s wife, I find the attitude of people who live in Dix Hills, New York, aka Long Island, appalling. The arrogance is downright nauseating. Since they need products and goods delivered by trucks just like any other town, you would think they would have come up with an idea that still made it possible for truckers to pull off the road and rest, eat and stretch. Without truckers rolling, this country would shut down. Surely these brilliant people know this? If anything, states should be working on ways to add more clean decent truck/rest stops, not on banning trucks from the few we have. Truckers sacrifice a lot to keep goods in circulation through-out this country. They have limited family time, miss seeing their kids grow up, or spending quality time with spouses or mates. But hey, Dix Hills just made it clear that they don’t give a darn about any of that! Therefore, I agree with others who say, “stop delivering goods there!” In fact, this problem should be addressed aggressively by the trucking industry. Trucking companies should join forces and blot Dix Hills, NY off of every truck route. I guess there are no truckers living in Dix Hills? Only in America!
Good Any goods going to Zip Code 11746 (Dix Hills,NY) Shall incur a $10 surcharge per piece.
Whoever decided to put a rest area in a rich area of the LIE is the idiot. There are sections that go through poorer areas where the people wold not object as much. They would love the local jobs. None of the people who work at that rest area will be from Dix Hills. This is a great example of government corruption.
Ok residents of Dix Hills. Love to see you how your quality of life would be if trucks quit delivering goods to your stuck up community.
To bad the DOT cut down those trees because you could have used the leaves in place of the toilet paper you would no longer have.
Let them pay $15 for a 1/2 gallon of Almond milk, since it has to be switched over to two different trucks and delivered by car. Let me know how your quality of life goes.
I say we shut down June 6 bring the economy to a halt. Than we will see how the fine citizens of Dix Hills NY cope when they can’t get the basic supplies
hey need MORE truck parking not LESS!! Take one of those derelict buildings that have NO WORTH except as drug/crime dens, bulldoze it, build truck parking with fences and cameras! Make it look like a prison yard, skuts will avoid it!
They, not hey. LOL my copy/paste dropped the first letter.
is far as im concerned the whole east coast doesnt exist my rig dont go past PA
Troy. Your right. All the truck drivers should start boycotting the island. Let them come and get their products or what ever it be. Drop it off out side of the State of New York, than see hat they would have to say.
One other thing. I hope they didn’t use federal funds for this rest stop such as Jasen’s Law or highway funds that we/us truck drivers paid into, in any way? I think OOIDA should look into this one for a possible lawsuit.
Shut the town down, refuse to deliver to any of the stores in or near it. Force the residents and businesses to go pick up their stuff from neighboring towns or cities. Put all of their businesses out of business. Then see how they change their minds.
“It’s also an improvement to the quality of life and air quality.” Not to mention your waisteline when truck drivers refuse to deliver any groceries to your little H— Hole of a burg.
Company drivers … it’s as easy as telling your dispatcher … ” I Don’t cross the Hudson. ” When I was OTR that was MY rule, and it worked well. I was with a very large company and kept being told, ” you have to take the load. ” I would reply, ” I don’t cross the Hudson. ” they got pissy a few times, but after I made MY rule and let em know I wasn’t BS’ing, they would have me drop the load in NJ or just give me a different load altogether. Made life much better.
Well I say no freight for Dicks Hill NY.
After 33 yrs of driving this is one of the reasons i gave it up. As far as i’m concerned the Gov. can kiss my *ss.
All this “I’ll never go there” & “don’t deliver there” talk has it all backwards.
What we ALL need to do is fill every block in that town to bursting in our 13th hour. Let the cops write tickets, a complete blockade for 10 hours would be more of a point. Also not only could they not round up enough heavy wreckers in a short period of time, those companies might have “mechanical issues” in solidarity.
If these kids can block up city streets with BLM and anti-police protests (“it’s our right to protest!”) why can’t we landlock and blockade this little hamlet for 48 hours?
I figure it’d take 4 trucks per intersection, there isn’t much more than 5-6 major roads in an out.
80-100 trucks would shut that little snob factory down. (Or they can be good little hippies and ride their bikes!)
AMEN!!! Now THAT is the smartest way to handle places like this.. Sadly though, I have found there are few Real drivers left to organize. Between the companies & the gov treating drivers like cattle, not a whole lot left but punks and “Aladdin”(s) who wash their feet in the same sinks we have to wash our faces and brush our teeth in. We get no respect as an industry anymore because 95% of what is left is the scum from the bowels of America.
It’s time for truckers to stand up expressing the power we actually possess.
Such action takes longer than 6 weeks !
But, becoming entangled through a debt based system prevents such action too, or does it?
Who has the collateral to offer the loan, Nationally or privately ?
No one !
Educate yourself and learn the manipulation through such deceit and take back the country from the corparate corruption controlling it all.
Or remain the slave you have become.
Exactly and to the point.
But I have to pay my bills!!
Cries the broke trucker who will continue working 70hrs a week as a slave.
If trucks aren’t allowed on the highway leading to the rest area, or the rest area itself, I’d stop delivering anything to the town. Let them figure out how to get supplies. All these places want their products/supplies, but they don’t want the trucks that get them there. If these states don’t want trucks in their city or state, all companies should refuse to enter the state.
My guess is that box truck are allowed.
This doesn’t bother me at all. I stopped going past Ohio long ago and it didnt matter if I was a company driver or O/O.
I made my choice because of the lack of respect and lack of service available for trucks.
When you stand in line for a cup of coffee and get passed over like your not there because your not local they can wait till Hell freezes over before they see me again.
I think an earthquake should hit and sink the whole east coast to the bottom if the ocean. That’s where they can go. Like each of you have said. They want there goods but have problems with trucks. I think that is a croc of crap. That’s why I don’t go there anymore as well.
Let the commies come pickup their goods outside of the city then.
The town is full of morons. It might be their town. However rest areas are jurisdiction of the state and as such the town should of had no say and their lawsuit would of been thrown out if it happened. The only thing the feds do have a say is that no commercial interest allow on interstate highways.
Truckers should not make any deliveries in their town, then lets see what happens.
