A trucker pulled into a country truck stop,
And called a gal he knew as a teen many years ago.
“What a surprise,” she said, “Sure, you’re close,
Seattle’s only a 4 hour drive from Othello…”
During the endless hours and empty stretches of road,
Memories came flooding back to his mind,
Of long legs, long hair and an innocence,
That still stirred him after all this time…
He remembered how back then they lived half a world away,
And Seventies hits played by the pool at the beginning.
At 14 they did not have the courage to take that kiss,
In front of all when the bottle quit spinning…
Exploring the sites and the night lights of that town,
After greeting each other with a warm hug and tears,
Two long lost friends once again found,
Their friendship had endured for more than 34 years…
Two days felt like that lifetime that had long slipped away,
But not the wishes, longings and dreams they dreamed,
So again in their minds Santana played,
And memories, like pictures were are just as they seemed…
But back to that country truck stop they drove.
And milepost by milepost the radio played their songs,
Sadly, how quickly their days together unwove,
Yet a renewed friendship would always be their bond…
Usually never present are circumstance and time,
To bring us together as we would wish,
Yet in this weekend of stars aligned,
Two old friends found the courage to take that kiss…
